Distribute copyrighted works out of UC Davis

To get started, fill in this Proposal for Distribution of Copyright-Protected Material form (for software DOC; generic PDF, DOC) and send it to us at copyright@ucdavis.edu. This is a universal form, so you may find some parts may not be applicable for your project.

Once we receive this information, we will go over the proposal with you and guide you on the various necessary permissions, budgets and pricing as needed. We will help you with license agreements, copyright assignments from authors or artists, and publication or distribution agreements as needed.

Academic Publishing

Academic scholars face a particular copyright problem with every article they publish. Historically most academic journals included a copyright assignment term in their publication agreements, meaning that in order to be published the author had to give up his/her copyrights. However, there are other ways to allow publication without such an extreme. Because academic papers typically belong to the faculty authors under the UC Policy on Copyright Ownership, UC Davis does not sign publication agreements nor can give legal advice regarding them. However, the ad hoc UC Special Committee on Scholarly Communication published several reports on the subject. Self-help ideas on protecting your own works when getting published can be obtained from SPARC.

"Note: Although the GNU GPL (General Public License) gets a lot of publicity, it is neither approved for distribution of University software nor recommended for individual use as it conflicts with the UC Patent Policy all employees sign. Most UC Davis licenses for software or other copyrighted materials are like the Creative Commons http://creativecommons.org licenses, but will be provided on a case-by-case basis along with appropriate disclaimers and liability terms."
